Launched in 1996 as part of the 25th anniversary celebration for AWIS, the Fellows Program aims to recognize and honor women and men who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to the achievement of equity for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Fellows represent all segments of society including government, business, education, and the non-for-profit community. Since the first cohort of Fellows in 1996, AWIS has selected 119 women and men to be honored as Fellows.

AWIS Fellows are nominated by an AWIS member, recommended by the Selection Committee, and elected by the AWIS Executive Board. Members of the Selection Committee are appointed by the President of AWIS and serve in an advisory capacity. Nominees need not be AWIS members.

To see a full description of the nomination process and to submit your nomination, please visit http://www.awis.org/about/FAQ.html.

Deadline for nominations is December 15, 2006.

Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation

http://www.switzernetwork.org/fellowship-overview.html

Deadline: January 11, 2007

The goal of the Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program is to support highly talented graduate students in New England and California whose studies are directed toward improving environmental quality and who demonstrate leadership in their field. Awards have been made to students pursuing environmental policy studies, economics, engineering, public health, and law as well as the more traditional sciences of biology, chemistry and physics. Technical knowledge, analytical skills and environmental experience are important components of a successful application, regardless of field of study.

The Fellowship provides a one-year $15,000 cash award for graduate study as well as networking and leadership support to awardees. Only the most active, committed and focused individuals will compete successfully to join the network of over 380 Fellows selected since 1986. Twenty Environmental Fellowships are awarded each year, ten in California and ten in New England. Candidates compete separately for Fellowships in New England and California. The Foundation seeks to select a diversity of students from different schools, programs, disciplines and career tracks in each Fellowship class.

The Foundation specifically seeks active, enthusiastic individuals who have the ability, determination and integrity to become environmental leaders in the 21st century. The career and professional goals of potential Fellows are carefully evaluated. Candidates with a strong vision of how they will apply their academic training to a career in the non-profit, government or private sector are preferred. Candidates pursuing academic careers, while not discouraged, are required to demonstrate their commitment to applied environmental problem solving beyond the classroom or university setting.

Fellowship applicants are evaluated based on their commitment to environmental problem solving and their potential for initiating positive environmental change. Applicants are also required to have strong leadership, communication and critical thinking skills, relevant work and volunteer experience and the necessary scientific or technical background for their field of study. Interdisciplinary approaches to environmental efforts are highly valued, as is a track record that demonstrates a commitment to environmental goals and positive impact. The Switzer fellowships are merit-based, however financial need of an applicant may be considered to distinguish between two equally deserving candidates.

The application process for the Switzer Environmental Fellowships is highly competitive. Each year, through an extensive application and interview process, 20 Fellows are selected out of an initial pool of more than 200. To receive an application, candidates must first be nominated in writing by a faculty member, advisor or environmental professional. Interviews are held in mid-May in San Francisco for the California Fellowships and in Boston for the New England Fellowships. Specific procedures and guidelines for the Switzer Fellowship application process can be found at Application Procedures and Guidelines.

GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM, WASHINGTON, D.C.

This Graduate Fellowship Program of the National Academies—consisting of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council—is designed to engage graduate and postdoctoral students in science and technology policy and to familiarize them with the interactions among science, technology, and government. As a result, students in the fields of science, engineering, medicine, veterinary medicine, business, and law develop essential skills different from those attained in academia, which will help them make the transition from being a graduate student to a professional.

We are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2007 sessions. The program will comprise three 10-week sessions:

Winter: January 8 through March 16
Summer: June 4-August 10
Fall: September 17 through November 21

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and those who have completed graduate studies or postdoctoral research within the last 5 years are eligible to apply. Candidates should submit an application and request that a mentor/adviser fill out a reference form. Both forms are available on the Web at <http://national-academies.org/policyfellows>.

The deadline for receipt of application material is November 1 for the winter program, March 1 for the summer program, and June 1 for the fall program. Candidates may apply to all three programs concurrently.
